La dépression est un problème majeur de santé publique en ce troisième millénaire. Si elle est connue pour sévir de façon particulièrement grave en Occident, le problème se révèle doublement compliqué en Afrique. Cette étude s'attache ainsi à comprendre la problématique des maladies dépressives en Afrique Noire en montrant comment la culture africaine détermine de façon singulière l'apparition des symptômes spécifiques. Ensuite, elle propose d'identifier et répertorier au-delà du noyau dépressif universel le syndrome dépressif typique africain. Si la socio-culture africaine induit des symptômes spécifiques dans le cas des maladies dépressives en Afrique, les évolutions socio-culturelle et économique comme conséquences de la modernisation en Afrique entraînent des modifications sémiologiques qui, selon le degré d'acculturation des sujets malades, tendent vers la dépression de type classique rencontrée en Occident. Tout en dénonçant l'erreur fondamentale d'une psychiatrie transculturelle concluant à la rareté, voire à l'inexistence de la dépression en Afrique Noire - thèse très en vogue dans les années soixante - l'étude pluridisciplinaire d'Alain Lamessi illustre aussi bien l'importance de la socio-culture que le degré d'acculturation dans la dynamique pathogène d'une population. Une recherche aussi pertinente que bienvenue pour une thématique rarement abordée.
